Friday Five - Design Eye for the Web Guy

What is the Friday Five? Here on random Fridays I will list five (or so) things that I find useful or of interest. Most of the time these will refer to web development or design, but on occasion I may throw a curveball into the mix to keep it interesting.

Today’s topic is “Design Eye for the Web Guy”, which is five really useful design/development resources that are must reads in my RSS reader. Remember the Five are all my opinion, hope you enjoy, now on with the Five!

dzone

dzone

dzone is a “Digg-like” aggregator of links and articles geared strongly towards a more technically savvy audience. dzone bills itself as “fresh links for developers”, and I have to say it does have tons and tons of very useful links every day.

Like Digg, dzone is user generated content, so sometimes I have to sift through the stories for stuff I am actually interested in, but by and large I still look forward to finding out all the very latest tips and tricks every morning. Also, the usual smack talk by Java developers about how superior Java is still makes me laugh at the inferiority complexes.

ajaxian

Ajaxian

A magazine all about JavaScript, AJAX, and related stories. Myself being a JavaScript guy, I love me some Ajaxian in the morning. I can’t get enough of the latest ins and outs of ECMA Script specifications, crazy new JavaScript libraries, cool code snippets, or fancy new applications that Ajaxian constantly delivers. Usually the first thing I read each day.

Smashing Magazine

Smashing Magazine

All I can say is “WOW” when I think about Smashing Magazine. Though relatively new, Smashing Magazine is chock full of goodies. When I am looking for design tips, inspiration, how to’s, tools, or just good articles, Smashing Magazine always delivers.

colour lovers

colour lovers

Face it people, a good color palette is VITAL to good design, and I think one of the toughest things to do is come up with new color combinations that look GOOD! Enter colour lovers.

Not only does this site have an exhaustive set of fantastic user generated color palettes and single unique color examples, but it also has an extremely informative and fun to read blog, of course the topic of choice is naturally, color.

…and come on how can you not like a site that uses the UK spelling for “colour”?

Design Float

Design Float

Another “Digg-like” aggregator of links like dzone, however Design Float (as the name suggests) focuses on Design. I like all the user generated content, it really lets me find out what is new without having to search the entire web myself. I have found lots of cool Photoshop tutorials, CSS tips and tricks, and design inspiration among the countless articles I have click through.

There, now go forth and discover all sorts of cool stuff, to better your own design skillz…

Enjoy!
